I always wondered if he ever learned that his garden was destroyed - the description of he and his geisha wife in a bath with water so hot the could only sit still to stand the hot water was something I could totally imagine every time I read it. Like the sensation when you come in from skiing so cold and the water in a hot tub kind of stings.
