BIOS updates do work, sometimes. A BIOS update is supposed to "fix" the Nvidia bad chip problem.

In truth, it moderates temperature on the motherboard long enough for the machine to be out of warranty before the lead on the GPU die finally melts and fails. That is to say, you can do a lot with a BIOS update.
