You are about to go outside for the first time. When the game puts you in this position, the shocking aspect is that there are some fights you simply cannot win. If something is much bigger than you, that's a hint. There are, however, ways the game lets you improve your position without forcing you to go outside your comfort zone. The key is to find those.
As you wander around the open map, you will eventually encounter a Behemoth and a giant jaguar type creature engaged in mortal combat. This is intended to scare and intimidate the user. There is, however, a trick to this sequence. As you almost assuredly know by now, gaining first strike can be a huge advantage in a battle. Similarly, if you fight two creatures already engaged in combat, their hit points are 50% lower.
Around the point where the Behemoth and giant cat are taking swipes at one another is a save spot. Use it. Then, go back and try to get a first strike. Assuming your party is strong enough (it may not be at first), you can win this fight. In doing so, you can win a lot of points toward level advancement on the skill tree. Even better, if you walk down the straightaway beside them until they have been off screen for a bit (I usually turn around at the cave...you'll understand this when you get there), they will re-spawn.
Rinse. Wash. Repeat.
Yes, this is a lot of grinding, but you can do other stuff in the background after you have learned how to win the fight easily. A couple of hours of this can change your party's composition from weaklings to overlords.
