I barely bothered to upgrade until around chapter 12. I'm pretty sure that's wrong. Meanwhile, we would grind whenever possible to have our skill trees as maxed as possible. There were several times when a chapter unlocked that we could purchase all freshly available skills right off the bat. That's the only way I'm comfortable playing Final Fantasy is to grind during the downtime.
