I read Strongbad's earlier post and agree with what you said about Spike and Richard having him do the "recon" on what table talk was happening. I don't think it even occurred to Mike to have Carla spy - and where Richard wanted to see all the dishes when they came back - they never showed Mike looking at them to gague what they ate and didn't eat ... it's a good example of where Richard's somewhat high level of anxiety/paranoia worked in his favor IMHO.
Also - when Tom said he did think Mike's fish was the best he'd ever had on Top Chef UNTIL HE ATE RICHARD'S FISH - that for me was a "tell" - I knew then that while they were both close - Richard was going to prevail.
I suspect Tom's visit to them both while they were getting ready also played into the feeling Tom had over who was the chef more skilled and ready. The thing you said about "managing mistakes" was the answer Richard gave to Tom's question at that visit during the prep time - and I think Richard's disposition vs. Mikes saying he was "in the weeds" and seeming flustered made an impression on Tom.
I thought on the aftershow that Mike was very gracious in complimenting Richard not only on the finale but also his game play throughout the show - Richard was a great contestant - helped quite a few during the challenges - and it was good of Mike to admit it.
