1) there are stay-at-home dads too. 2) how old can the kids be, do we think, before that's not a valid excuse?

like, if the child is in school and doesn't require FT attention, should the stay at home PARENT get at least a PT job?

That's what I think too. Plenty of people out there need jobs, no reason for me to take one I don't need. I'd be gardening, doing dog training, etc. -- nm
