Overall I really liked his films. They always looked gorgeous (thank you Sven Nykvist), and there were a few throwaways but overall I would say A-.

I think you could skip the earliest works (the stuff before Sawdust and Tinsel). His first films didn't really jump out as someone who was going to become a legendary director. Then skip The Serpent's Egg (which seems like a stab at Hollywood sellout) and The Magic Flute (unless you really want to watch the filmed stage show). Everything else is totally worthwhile. My favorite is The Silence, but if you were only going to watch one Bergman movie, I would say to go with The Seventh Seal.
