I'd feel that his position is stronger, but not to a degree that I'd begrudge her the feelings she has.

if you have the experience and know the sacrifices a child demands are beyond what you want, it's harder for me to criticize you than the "Things change" that seems present in the first instance.
Not that Things Change is a copout in it's own right.
