You can do both. But the anglo-spanish thing we got doesn't really encourage the assimilation

you came to the melting pot (or were born here) becuase it's great...it's been that freedom and the language of that freedom is english.
if there's no real assimilation becuase of losing your cultural identity, feel free...head home to that culture, apply for a work visa and wait.
otherwise, I get the feeling the people who aren't actively involved in being americans are just taking advantage of america.
