The thing to look at is whether 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants have learned English.

And, almost universally, they have.
Right now, we have a pretty large 1st generation Spanish speaking population. It's a hiccup.
We are in no danger of losing our identity and their kids and grandkids will learn English.
The only thing that forcing English on the 1st generation immigrants does is make them feel unwelcome and encourage the type of insularity that results in 2nd and 3rd generation immigrants standing strong with their parents and NOT learning English.
