An ex-gf of mine saw it as a step to getting married. A pretty necessary one

That is to say, a couple shouldn't move in together unless they are very serious (like SB's example). Conversely, before a couple gets married they ought to live in sin for a while as a sort of test.
I tend to agree with this.
