Do yourself a favor and have him tested for the gifted program right when he starts kindergarden. If you don't, he'll get bored and the teachers will try to get you to put him on Ritalin or some related drug. I speak from experience.
When D started kindergarden she'd been reading for 2 1/2 years and writing for 1 year. She was so bored she acted out and her teacher almost had me convinced she had ADHD. Fortunately my pediatrician had a little boy the same age, same school, and got the same "diagnosis" from a different teacher. His rule of thumb was, if the kid can sit and watch a 1 hour video, there's no way they're hyperactive. He said (and I agree) that teachers have to teach down to the slowest kid in the class. The average kids can deal with it, but the really bright ones can't tolerate the sheer boredom. So instead of doing things that challenge the bright kids, the teachers get them put on drugs to damp down their natural curiousity and restlessness when bored.
