LIR: IIRC one reason magazine ad revenue hasn't taken a huge hit along with newspapers is that they make it easy to target a specific audience.

Since there is a huge variety of themes among magazines, you know where to target your ads, if you know who your audience is. Whereas traditional newspapers make it difficult to target according to age, gender, etc.
Responses:
Also, when computing ad rates, magazines depend on the number of subscribers. Why else do you think they give away free subscriptions all the time.
