With individuals, I think it depends in large part on the idividual and the sport.

From a lot of what I'd heard before Tiger was busted for cheating he wasn't well liked by other golfers.
There are also things such as what happened with Chris Benoit. The other wrestlers were avoiding saying anything bad about him.
Also, golf is an individual sport. I think it's more likely that teams stick with their teammates, but competitors in individual sports is different.
