One of the things they did in the pilot (which I think you have seen) is demonstrate that Boyd is a step above all of the random southern lowlifes he's stuck with. What they have effectively done since then is introduce the rest of the Boyd and Bennett clans to demonstrate how rare the Boyds and Mags Bennetts are.
This also reinforces what a badass Raylan's dad is since he's been a Boyd Crowder all his life yet he is still alive at an advanced age. I also love that we saw in the little girl last night how the women in these situations turn into Mags Bennetts.
