Just because it was a successful gimmick doesn't mean it wasn't still a gimmick.

"gimmick -noun: an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, especially one designed to attract attention or increase appeal."
They were definitely counting on the novelty of the motion control to draw attention and increase appeal rather than competing on the sheer specs.
