LIR: The salary for that particular job isn't the only reason companies ask applicants for salary requirements.

I think companies genuinely want to know what the market is like for salaries. When they ask applicants for their "salary requirements," they are collecting data and seeing how the pay they have in mind lines up with what's in the job market at that point in time. I think companies want to know whether they are in the low end or high end or whatever of what salaries are being offered, because this is something that affects the quality of talent they will be able to attract *and keep*.
