I know a flashlight app provides a little more light, but I've never needed to do more than just turn on my phone to get a light I can use. -- nm

The flashlight app is also nice when you need a light to stay on. i.e., so it doesn't go dark after 10 seconds of non-use.

Usually, yeah. Sometimes I need to use the flashlight app on my iPhone 4 because it can turn on the LED flash (as a very bright light) -- nm

on my droid x the flash is surprisingly bright - much brighter than the cell it self. -- nm
