I cannot figure out how this can possibly be right, but they called, said they reread the meter and confirmed my bill was accurate.

*knock knock* Hello there, neighbor! Saaay, by any chance would you happen to be siphoning my gas to power a small meth lab of any kind?

Happened to me. They read the meter in August and then estimated until January or February and then read the meter.

'tis. Which is why that first winter bill after an actual reading was a shock.

They either were estimating before and it was low, or there is something wrong with your line.

I've lived here for three years now, this is the first time anything like this has happened. -- nm

There is zero percent chance it's correct. Ask to speak to their boss, have them look at the combined total of your past 12 months. -- nm

I'd have the lines checked over, and maybe even the meter.

some places they just estimate usage, then periodically have the meter read for real

I always assumed the meter was read monthly, but I have no idea for sure. -- nm
