there's been a huge controversy here locally regarding the selection of judges by the Democratic party via nominating convention versus a primary election. I don't recall if/how it was resolved, but traditionally, the local Democratic party establishment essentially chose who got to be on the ballot, with a heavy dose of patronage on the side.
