Crown Land does not always mean they have exclusive rights to them....most of Canada is Crown Land and it simply means that Government controls it ...

on behalf of the Crown.
The Royal Family does have some private estates like Sandringham in Scotland which they recieved from a person who married into the family. Both Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace are both their homes but both are legally owned by the State.
I agree that it might be hard to truly measure their benefit, in my mind its much easier to have a non activelyu involved monarch as the symbol of head of state then it is to have a President or other head of state who might take a more active role and over rule the elected members of government (for me this means Parlliament).
And dont worry...not taking any of this personally :P
