I will be surprised if no SS (or related program) exists, but I expect it to be smaller and gutted, perhaps with a means test.

It will HAVE to be, the way our spending crisis is going. I find it best to plan as if it won't be there, because I have no idea what will actually be there.
I vested in my pension as well, but when my company ended the program, they stopped contributions. So, my (minuscule) pension grows at, basically, interest rate until retirement. Vested don't mean as much as you think.
