It was '82 or '83, during a an exchange trip with the music department in high school with a school in Woburn.
Three of us were being billeted by a family and when we heard about the Combat Zone in Boston, we mentioned wanting to go there and see it.
The people told us that it was too dangerous, so I said something stupid like I would bring a chain or such for protection if anyone bothered us. They said that whoever it was would just pull their gun.
Being from Canada (although born in TX) especially back then, I figured that was just hyperbole.
Anyway, the whole school group went to Fenway for part of a game and there were these two couples (late 20's maybe) a few rows back. One of the guys was going through the picnic basket they had and one of the girls saw a cop walking nearby. She said to the guy, "Quick, close it or he'll see the sawed-off"
After that I believed that *everyone* *did* carry a gun.
Of course, one of my friends and I did go to the Combat Zone anyway but that, my friends, is a story for another day.
