I admit that I have not read the books but the Wikipedia article makes it sound very much like The Tripod Series I read as a kid....(link)

Not sure if thats true but to me the Wiki's seem similar.
Not heard of this series outside of ST and I just enquired with the Childrens Department of our Central Library (we are in the same building) and they say while its popular, there are others that get many more requests.
