Prince put on a great show on Saturday.

This old school heavy metal kid is not used to seeing so much spectacle/flashiness. I've been to a lot of concerts in my life, and everything about this show was top notch: the backup singers, the band, the twin dancing girls...

Prince simply has not aged like his contemporaries. He still looks pretty much the same, and he had the audience eating out of the palm of his hand. Also, I've never seen an entire arena full of people up on their feet dancing like that. (Such a thing is probably familiar to MDH or JackDawson, though :)) People were so happy to be there. Even the cool holdouts were standing by the end of it.

I can't help but think Prince is using this and other residencies to burnish his concert reputation. Like he's rehearsing for a Vegas stint. The show had a definite "revue" feel to it. Lots of medlies and covers (thought he's known for doing covers). Also lots of songs I didn't recognize, just because I haven't heard all his stuff. There were at least three encores. And yes, there was more after the lights went up.

I'm thinking I will go again this weekend (but the tickets don't seem to be on sale yet. :/

Opening act was Esparanza Spalding, who I now have a crush on. Woman is sexy. She plays complicated electric and upright jazz bass while singing. She does both very well. I want to hug her huge afro.

Partial set list (just off the top of my head):

Pop Life
Take Me With U
I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man
I Would Die 4 U
Cream
If I Was Your Girlfriend
Let's Go Crazy/Delirious
When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
Controversy
1999
Glamorous Life (feat. Sheila E.)
