We have very good, committed doctors (possible tmi inside)

Sometimes with stalled labor, or failure to dilate, the doc can stretch the cervix gently, then just patiently wait for Mama to naturally finish effacing. My docs do this all the time, but it's a huge time sink. Also, they don't push epidurals on everyone, they try to encourage all the Mamas to go natural--there are fewer complications that way. However, they don't refuse pain meds or an epidural if the patient asks for it. This practice has quite a good reputation in the region for delivering healthy babies and discharging Mama/baby 24 hours after delivery. :)
