I presume there is a seperate class of games that "phone home" DRM style that still could be called a patch loader.

But it appears Oblivion is playable sans patch. I'm not really sure how much I'm going to like the game. I found Morrowind fun if overwhelming. I got Oblivion for nothing using Amazon credits.
