This is something Kim and I were discussing a while back.

Gail Simone, my favorite writer in comics, wound up having to write Wonder Woman because the chick who wrote My Sister's Keeper (the Cameron Diaz/Abigail Breslin film) bailed on the gig. She made a comment at the time how much harder it was than she had expected. When Simone showed up, she immediately had Grendel (!) fight Wonder Woman. I realized then and there that there simply is not a decent foe in her rogues gallery.
Of course, just because we don't know a villain doesn't mean they can't be interesting. Doc Octopus made for an exemplary movie character whereas I have to believe he's absolutely ridiculous as a comic book villain.
