First consideration: screen size. Which is more important: portability or screen real estate?

Also, the size and feel of the keyboard. E.g., a 17" screen will usually come with a number pad, whereas the smaller ones usually won't. But commuting with a 17" laptop may be a pain.
The hardware will generally be sufficient for all your work and photo purposes on almost any new laptop.
