It felt a little insecure with itself, as if not sure it could sell the idea of continuing the adventure. So the already exaggerated performances grew

a touch more so. And yes, the center of the film flounders around a bit until they get to where they wanted... probably an over correction from the critique of over plotting in 2 and 3.
But it's highly respectable for a fourth in such a large franchise.
So, in essence, we're just going to have to disagree until you walk the plank.
