Something I never thought I'd be excited to say: My cat peed!

On Thursday I realized he (7 years old) probably hadn't peed in a day or 2. He kept going into a litter box and just squatted there for minutes at a time with very little pee. He even went in the little litter box that's for the little cat (he's pretty big and barely fits in the little box). Called the vet Friday and they said to bring him in.

Physical exam was inconclusive (no extended bladder). X-ray inconclusive (no visible blockage). They kept him overnight. Still no pee. His appetite was OK. He's drinking water (some).

Vet called Saturday morning and gave the option to being him home for the weekend. (I love this vet. They not only care about the animals, they also care about costs.) They gave me a small litter box and some non-absorbant litter (basically plastic jimmies). Also a couple of sedative meds. Showed me how to palpate his bladder. And a syringe to collect the pee so they can check for crystals and/or infection.

He was very stoned when we left the vet. About 3 minutes from home I suddenly smelled pee. He went in his carrier! And into a blanket so there was nothing to collect. *sigh*

Put him in a bedroom by himself with food, water and the litter box. He ate & drank but wouldn't pee. Gave him the pills before I went to bed. (They're supposed to relax him so he'll pee.) I expected he would settle down and go to sleep. Instead he cried for 3 hours, wanting out of the room. Finally he went to sleep and then I went to sleep.

No pee in the morning. Gave him pills again, fed and watered him, then left him to himself. He tipped over the litter box so I had to call around to find some non-absorbant litter. Went out and got some ceramic pellets used in one of those cat litter "systems". Got out a larger box and put the pellets down. 20 minutes later I checked on him and he was in the box - peeing!

Got a syringe full of pee. Threw out the litter, let him out of the room and there's now peace in the house. The other 2 cats kept worrying at the door, wondering why Jason was locked up and they were kept out. Tomorrow, after work, I take the syringe to the vet. Total charges, btw (including the ceramic litter and urinanalysis yet to be done): $159.

Hopefully, there's nothing seriously wrong. Maybe he's just being moody. I'm planning on going away next weekend (already put down $300 non-refundable). It would suck if I had to stay home to nurse the cat. My travelling companion offered to stay while I went by myself but that won't be as much fun. Here's hoping the vet says no major problem.
