My sister had it when she was like 9 and burst into tears; she was certain that it would make her blind.

Scarlet Fever is just a flavor of strep throat. She had seen the episode of "Little House on the Prairie" where the older sister went blind as a consequence of having scarlet fever. Yay for medicine!
