if you've got hostiles staring at you while you try to get comfortable with the equipment, you feel uncomfortable and embarrassed.

therefore, you have a bad feeling about the place (and yourself, for what it's worth) and don't want to go back. It's tough enough to make that commitment to try to change. Maybe instead of glaring at them, you could offer to help.
Me, I'm always pleased when I see people making the effort and changing their life for the better. Good for them.
