I didn't mean that they aren't comfortable with who they are, just that the reason many gay bars sprung up (I thought) was to avoid disapproval.

Maybe not anymore, but I thought this was a core reason for their existence at one time in some places: so gay people can be comfortable being themselves around like-minded folks, and not feel uncomfortable in unwelcome environments or feel forced to not be themselves.
