Oh, you must have been talking with Ms Wade.
She's a stickler for titles.
Sounds like you were calling about a business account. If you're calling about a corporation and you say you're president you're good. If you're Vice Pres, Sec or Teasurer, they'll ask if you can legally bind. If you say yes, you're good. Many reps will argue with you about other titles although they're supposed to stop when you say you can bind.
If you're calling about a partnership or multi-member LLC that files a 1065 you must have been a partner in the period you're calling about.
If you're a partnership, any number-member LLC or Sole Prop who files a Corp return then the Corp rules for officers apply.
If you're none of the above and don't want to lie about your title then you really should get 2848 or 8821 signed giving you authority on the account. Super easy. They don't check if the person who signed is legally allowed to sign. But there must be a title next to the signature. They're not supposed to question the title on the form but some will so use the correct title for the entity. (Technically, if the form said "Janitor" they're supposed to accept it. The onus is then on the person who signed the form, not the IRS.)
