but, is it money you would have spent anyway? i use all my points programs for gift cards in november which i then use to buy christmas presents.

if i only have enough for $5 or $10 dollars i just skip it till next year.
i don't have that many though. really just airmiles.ca and The Bay/Zellers points. My Shoppers Drug Mart ones i just use as soon as they have a bonus weekend so that the points are worth more than normal.
