The behavior of the mom and how she handles the situation means everything to a child who finds themselves in that situation. At the time, I don't think I comprehended that our lives were in danger, or even felt a need to be scared, because my mom kept her cool and didn't freak out. I hope your friend shows her strong side toward her son, because that will mean everything to the kid and moving past this. This poor kid, I can't help but wonder if counseling is in the cards for him right now.
