In response to "I disagree. If we start losing jobs again and head for a double dip Obama can't survive. -- nm" by Bacon

Carter was severely damaged by a primary challenge from Ted Kennedy yet was leading Reagen until the debates.

If a presidential incumbent like Carter - tied down with a hostage crisis, energy crisis, and MASSIVE inflation could still carry a lead, it says something for incumbents. It also says something for charisma when Reagen CRUSHED Carter in the debates.

The reverse can be said for George H.W. Bush a wave of popularity into the elections. He was universally loved after the Gulf War. The Democrat was sure to lose. But then along came Clinton and his down home charisma, and it was over for Bush. Although I'll grant you that a downturn in the economy didn't help Bush.

Finally, George W. Bush had everything going for him going into his re-election bid. If the Democrats had been able to put anyone with a modicum of personality against him, the son would have followed his father.

Combine Obama's personality with the extremism of his likely opponent, and the economy will not matter. Or rather, it will matter in the sense that no one's going to vote for a fringe candidate when the bottom line is at stake.
