it's a bad choice either way. but they simply can't continue to lose market share in the console space imo. that's the real bottom line...

if the december numbers are as bad as i think they'll be (and given that november's were pitiful and showed them to be the only one of the three boxes declining, i think that's a reasonable proposition) they will have to do something to spur sales. they had made serious promises to shareholders early in 08 that really put them in a bind for q4, but now they at least have some wiggle room to do something to kick start sales. they just can't afford not to do it if december looks like november did compared to nintendo and microsoft.
