When he was working there, he was having performance issues with his system. He mentioned in passing to his boss that he may need more memory. That afternoon, he defragged his system and its performance immediately improved. The following morning, he had a massive amount of memory added (needlessly, as it turned out). They understood that the cost of him not being able to perform his tasks was much more expensive than a couple of memory chips.
