The jump from X-Men to X-2: X-Men United is one of the most dramatic I've ever seen in a franchise.

That entire movie is a series of incidents where the good randomly meet one another, the bad randomly run into the good guys, and then they fight for a while. It's readily apparent that 80 minutes of footage had to be cut, because there is absolutely no cohesion to the story. To Singer's credit, he realized he had missed a lot, so he cut it down to a point where it was watchable, but that's about all I've ever found it to be.
Our other consideration from the X-Men franchise was also in X-2. It's the one where Wolverine gets shot in the head and all of the police cars get blown up.
