i guess there was the expectation that it would be wrapped up, but nothing was ever explicitly stated.
it's not like this sort of thing hasn't been done before.
personally, i liked the last second twist a lot.
i wonder about the announcement of the timing of the s2 renewal - they had to have known well in advance that it would be picked up for a second season, right? if not, they would have had to write another whole ending.
actually, that's not right at all - if there wasn't an s2, all they would have to have done is to leave off the last 45 seconds!
