That's my problem with it. (spoils, spec.)

In part because a second season wasn't a sure thing. I have no issues with the case spread over the entire season. I think the end of the season, especially the first season with the possibility of no second season, should end in a resolution. It sets a bad precedent because if they continue doing that there will eventually be an unsolved case. And why would people invest time in a show that they know will have no resolution.
I expected it wasn't him when the adviser said he was wet like he'd been in the water when he returned. I think he either knew she was locked in the trunk and someone else put the car in the water and he tried to save her, or he didn't know she was there and he drove the car into the water (maybe on purpose, maybe not) and then escaped.
