I re-watched Philosopher's Stone (Sorceror's Stone) this weekend and I was shocked by how much it wasn't good.

This may be the first time I've seen it as "The Sorceror's Stone". They actually recorded the lines twice. Dang! That's hard core. Stupid Americans.
The visual effects are weak. There's a number of scenes where we're expected to goggle at how amazing a visual effect is, but 10 years on, it's all very meh... Scenes that look like we're supposed to be watching Criss Angel doing some stupid stunt, a pause... wait for applause. No thanks. Not very impressed.
And the story is so compressed that it's less a movie and more a historical narrative with the characters repeatedly falling into exposition rather than dialogue ("Can you believe Harry Potter was made the seeker on the Gryfindor Quiddich squad?!")
Acting isn't all that impressive, either, but I wonder how much of it is attributable to the fact that we had some very young, inexperienced children leading the cast.
And, of course, Chris Columbus is a disastrous hack.
Sorceror's Stone and Death Hallows: Part 1 are like night and day.
