My assumption is he's lost half the independents either because they'll stay home or vote GOP.

There's a winning message in "it took more than 8 years to get into this mess, I need more than 4 to get us out and it'd be nice to have a Congress that didn't try to shut the government down every time I ask them to make hard choices."
