We could still buy from Amazon so long as they don't have a 'presence' in California.

Dumping the California associates removes any possibility that they could be defined as that business presence.
I went through this with various states when I was at Primal. We had to carefully define that our sales reps were independent reps, and had no direct affiliation with us. We only collected sales tax from online sales to California addresses.
