Stuck at the first hurdle...too many choices!!!

AMD AM2 Athlon 64/Sempron/Athlon 64 X2 (Socket 940)
AMD AM2 Phenom
AMD Athlon 64/Sempron (Socket 754)
AMD Athlon 64/Sempron/X2 Dual Core (Socket 939)
Intel Core 2
Intel Pentium 4 (Socket 478)
Intel Pentium 4 500/600/800/900 Series 775

Heck, what is the newest/current cpu now???
