In response to "I thought they were all meeting again today and things were looking good? Has something new come out? -- nm" by Jim

Head of NFLPA told the players a deal isn't even close.

NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith reportedly told several top players during a conference call that the owners and the players aren't on the verge of a deal, according to FOX Sports.

Per the report, Smith told multiple Pro Bowl selections that a new collective bargaining agreement isn't close to being struck and communicated that he didn't like the owners' offer enough to present to the players at this point.

Baltimore Ravens All-Pro middle linebacker Ray Lewis(notes) reportedly asked Smith, "How optimistic are you that a deal will get done soon?"

And Smith replied there's reason for hope.

Smith insisted that any time the two sides are working together, as they are now, there is reason for hope.

Part of the divide between the owners and the players is over free agency terms and whether players will be granted unrestricted free agent status after four years or six years.

"At one point, we were asked if we could sell six years of free agency to our locker rooms, and we all said theres no way," a player said.

At this rate, a deal before July 4 seems unlikely to happen.
