Here's the thing: when I use it to make plans, or in practice, I would call tonight midnight Thursday, because it's part of the Thurs night activities

In a news article where someone got murdered tonight at midnight, I would expect them to describe the murder as happening at midnight on Friday. For clarity, saying "midnight on Friday morning" is often helpful.
