As I understand it, people responded to the writing. If nothing else had been changed but the subject heading from Memoir to Novel, the writing would have still been the same. If people respond to it differently based on their expectation of whether it's based on real events or not, that's on them.

It would be another thing if I sold a textbook as history with falsehoods in it, but personal history? F you, readers, take it or leave it.
